About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
This is a Tabriz, one of the great city-workshop rugs of Persia, measuring 302 x 200 cm (9'11" x 6'7"). Tabriz has set the standard for Persian medallion design for five centuries, its weavers known above all for precise, symmetrical drawing and an exceptional sense of colour balance. This piece stands in that same tradition, though its balance here is unusually quiet.
What you see
The field is a warm sand-beige shifting into grey-brown, covered edge to edge with a fine Mahi lattice that reads more as texture than pattern. Over it sits a scalloped medallion built from nested lobed layers in terracotta and ivory - its shape is what defines it, since the terracotta barely lifts above the beige field around it. A narrow multi-band border, palmette and vine in the same terracotta and beige, is held between thin dark guard stripes, keeping the same restrained register as the field.
How it was made
That restraint is the result of deliberate work. The pile is wool with silk, knotted in the symmetrical Turkish knot Tabriz is known for, at a density of 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre - silk spins finer than wool, which is what lets a weaver draw the medallion's scalloped outline and the Mahi lattice this precisely at this scale. It is signed work from the Pirozian workshop, a name Tabriz collectors look for, and a density like this means months of steady knotting.
