About This Tabriz

Where it comes from

This is a Tabriz, from the northwestern Persian city that has set the standard for workshop weaving for five centuries, measuring 309 x 199 cm (10'2" x 6'6"). Tabriz ateliers are known above all for their command of the central medallion and for an unusually precise balance of colour across the field, both qualities at work here from the first look.

What you see

The eye goes straight to the medallion: a deep aubergine outer ring gives way to a glowing rust-orange band, then to a small cream centre, so the shape reads less as one motif than as a set of nested rings. It floats on a plain camel field patterned faintly with Mahi fish-scale, kept quiet so the medallion can carry the room. A narrow navy-black border closes the design, filled with small palmettes in rust, camel and cream that echo the medallion's palette without repeating it.

How it was made

The rug is knotted with the symmetric, or Turkish, knot that Tabriz weavers favour for a firm, tight structure, and at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre each ring of the medallion keeps a clean colour boundary rather than a blurred one. The pile is wool with an admixture of silk, which takes a finer, more lustrous line than wool alone and gives the aubergine and rust bands their light sheen. It is signed by the workshop's master, Abdollahi, a named hand behind the drawing.

At home

A rug of this size suits a dining table or a living room seating group, large enough to hold the room. The camel field warms a pale floor and stays calm under furniture, while the aubergine and rust medallion holds its own against dark wood. The low pile is firm underfoot, and as daylight crosses it the rings of colour deepen and lighten in turn.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 309 × 199 cm (6.15 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 6.15 m² that is roughly 2.7 to 3.1 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
