Where it comes from
This is a Tabriz, from the Persian city that has set the benchmark for precision weaving for five centuries, 234 x 168 cm (7'8" x 5'6"). Tabriz workshops are known for the symmetric knot and for a design repertoire that runs from central medallions to all-over garden patterns; this piece takes the all-over Mahi lattice, in a paler, warmer red than usual for that design.
What you see
The field reads as a warm terracotta rather than the deeper brick usually seen with this pattern, closer to salmon in places. Across it runs a fine, dense lattice of diamonds, no medallion breaking the repeat, the grid picked out in navy-black lines with ivory rosettes at each crossing, small notes of red and green scattered through. A wide border in matching salmon-pink carries navy-outlined floral cartouches, echoing the field's darker accents without competing with it.
How it was made
The lattice owes its sharpness to the symmetric, or Turkish, knot that Tabriz weavers favour, locking tightly around the warp to hold a fine line without blurring. Wool carries the field's colour, but silk runs through the pile too, spinning thinner and letting the knot count climb to 441,000–500,000 per square metre — dense enough to draw the grid crisp rather than soft. The piece is signed, from the Pirozian workshop, a name attached to precision rather than anything made quickly.
At home
This size suits a dining table with room to spare, or a seating group in a living room, the pattern reading well since there is no medallion to centre. The salmon-terracotta warms a room with darker furniture and holds its own against pale floors. Underfoot the pile is low, tight and firm, warm to the foot and suited to daily use. Under changing light the ivory rosettes catch first, then the navy grid settles quietly back.
