About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
A Tabriz, one of the classic city-workshop rugs of Persia, measuring 235 x 154 cm (7'9" x 5'1"). Tabriz has drawn the templates for Persian medallion design for five centuries, and its weavers work from a cartoon rather than memory, which is why the drawing on this piece is so precisely repeated on both sides of the field. What sets this one apart is how quietly it carries its detail: nothing here is loud, though a great deal is going on close to the surface.
What you see
The first impression is of a warm terracotta medallion held against an ivory ground, its scalloped edge answered by matching spandrels in the corners. Around it the field fills with fine floral scrollwork in sage, navy and gold, and only on a closer look do small stylised birds appear, worked in among the vine scrolls flanking the medallion. A woven signature sits near one end of the border. That border itself runs broad and brick-red, its geometric and floral cartouches in alternating panels giving the pale centre a firm, deliberate frame.
How it was made
This is possible because the rug is knotted on a silk warp, which is finer than wool and lets the weaver tie a smaller, tighter knot without losing structure. That density — 501,000 to 640,000 knots per square metre — sits toward the upper end of what a workshop attempts, and it is what allows a bird the size of a fingertip to keep its shape in wool and silk pile. At 7 mm the pile stays low enough to hold every line of the drawing, which is also why the surface takes light with a slight, even lustre rather than a deep shine.
At home
At this size it sits comfortably in a bedroom or under a seating group in a living room, somewhere it can be looked at rather than only walked across. The ivory ground lifts a room with pale flooring, while the terracotta and brick-red hold their own against darker furniture nearby. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for daily use rather than display, and its detail is not something you take in on arrival. The birds among the scrollwork are the kind of thing you notice on the second week, then keep noticing.
