About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
This is a Tabriz, one of the great weaving cities of Persia, and this piece measures 350 x 249 cm (11'6" x 8'2"). Tabriz workshops have set the standard for finely drawn, precisely knotted rugs for five centuries, their name most associated with the central medallion design that has become a byword for Persian formality. This one carries a signature, from the workshop of master weaver Abdollahi, and it takes that familiar medallion format somewhere unexpected.
What you see
The field is a pale cream, and against it the eye goes straight to a large scalloped medallion with pointed pendant finials, drawn not in the cool blue usually seen on this design but in a deep, warm blackish-brown, its inner rosette picked out in rust-terracotta. Around the medallion the field fills with the small repeating diamonds and stylised fish of a Mahi lattice, fine and dense across the whole cream ground. A wide border, near-black and roughly a fifth of the rug's width, frames it all with a running vine of rust, gold and cream, echoing the medallion's warmth rather than the field's pale calm.
How it was made
That crispness comes from how the rug was tied. It is hand-knotted with the symmetric, or Turkish, knot that Tabriz weavers favour for its firm, stable structure, at a density of 501,000 to 640,000 knots per square metre, on a cotton warp with a pile of wool and silk. Silk takes a finer twist than wool, so it lets the knot tie down smaller and tighter, which is what allows a scalloped medallion outline and a lattice this fine to hold their edges rather than blur. At the upper end of that density a rug of this size represents months of steady work at the loom, and it shows in the level, 7mm pile and the light sheen the silk gives the surface.

At 350 x 249 cm this is a dining room or living room rug, sized for a table setting or a sofa group rather than a smaller space. The cream ground will lift a room with pale flooring, while the near-black border and rust medallion give it enough weight to hold its own near dark wood furniture. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for daily use rather than careful preservation, and as daylight moves across it the silk in the medallion and border catches the light in a way the matte wool around it does not.
