About This Tabriz

Where it comes from

This is a Tabriz, one of Persia's great weaving cities, and it measures 302 x 197 cm (9'11" x 6'6"). Tabriz workshops have set the standard for finely drawn, precisely balanced carpets for five centuries, and the medallion design shown here is the city's signature. What marks this piece within that tradition is restraint: a Tabriz medallion carpet is usually built on bold colour blocking, and this one is not.

What you see

The first impression is of a pale, warm ivory field, softly coloured rather than patterned at a glance. Across it runs a dense scroll of floral vines, carrying a central medallion with its pendants above and below, all worked in pink, powder blue, coral and muted gold kept close to the ground tone rather than set against it. The wide floral border continues the same quiet key, until the eye reaches the corner and mid-border cartouches, drawn in a noticeably darker gold-brown that stands apart from everything around it.

How it was made

Two things account for this. The rug is hand-knotted in the symmetric, or Turkish, knot that Tabriz weavers favour for its tight, firm structure, which is what gives every scrolling line and every cartouche its clean, unblurred edge. The pile itself is wool blended with silk over a cotton warp; silk takes dye and light differently to wool, and it is this that lets the pinks and blues sit so softly against the ivory instead of standing out from it, with a faint sheen across the surface that shifts as you move past it.

At home

A rug this size sits naturally under a dining table or in front of a sofa group, in a living or dining room with room enough to see the whole medallion at once. Against pale flooring it warms the room without dominating it; against darker wood or furniture, it holds its own quietly rather than competing. Underfoot the pile is fine, low and even, dense enough for a room in regular use. In changing light the darker cartouches catch the eye first, then release it back to the calm field around them.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 302 × 197 cm (5.95 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
