About This Tabriz

Where it comes from

This is a Tabriz runner from northwest Iran, 345 x 81 cm (11'4" x 2'8"). Tabriz has led Persian workshop weaving for five centuries, valued for the symmetric Turkish knot that gives a taut, precise weave, and for a command of colour balance that few other cities have matched. This piece carries the woven signature of the Pirozian workshop in one corner of the field.

What you see

The field runs in alternating bands of cream and rust, each filled with the same fine Mahi lattice of diamonds, so the pattern reads less as one continuous repeat than as a sequence, one ground giving way to the next along the length of the rug. There is no medallion to anchor the eye; the rhythm of the bands does that instead. A wide border in cream, rust and dark navy carries a fine repeating floral vine, its steadier, contained lines holding the shifting field together.

How it was made

The symmetric knot Tabriz is known for gives each diamond in the lattice a sharp, clean edge, which is exactly what lets the alternating bands stay distinct rather than blur into one another. The pile is wool finished with silk, knotted at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre on a cotton warp: silk takes a far finer twist than wool, so wherever it runs through the pattern the outlines sharpen a little further. At 7 mm the pile sits low and even, holding that precision underfoot instead of softening it.

At home

A runner of this length and width is made for a hallway or a long landing, somewhere the eye travels along it rather than resting on one spot. The rust and cream bands carry their own warmth even with no daylight reaching them, while the navy in the border keeps the whole piece from turning too soft. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for a passage that gets walked every day rather than kept for best. As the light along the hall shifts through the day, it is the bands, one after another, that catch it.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 345 × 81 cm (2.79 m²) this is a runner. It belongs in a hallway, an entrance, on a landing or lengthways beside a bed. It is too narrow for the middle of a room.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 2.79 m² that is roughly 1.2 to 1.4 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
