About This Tabriz

Where it comes from

This is a hand-knotted Tabriz, also written Tabrīz, from the Persian city long regarded as the benchmark for workshop-woven rugs, measuring 351 x 250 cm (11'6" x 8'2"). Tabriz weavers work from a drawn cartoon and favour the symmetric knot, which gives their rugs a taut, clearly defined surface. Where the city's medallion designs are usually bold and graphic, this one is drawn almost in miniature.

What you see

A warm sand field carries an extremely fine, all-over diamond lattice — the mahi pattern worked almost to the scale of woven cloth rather than a bold motif. At its centre the lattice gathers into a scalloped, multi-lobed medallion in deep rust-red, with two pendants reaching along the vertical axis, olive-grey and navy showing faintly within the tiny diamonds around it. A broad terracotta-brown border of floral vine, set between ivory guard stripes, closes the design and gives the pale field something firm to rest against.

How it was made

The symmetric, Turkish knot Tabriz workshops favour holds each knot square and firm, keeping the lattice crisp even at this scale. The pile is wool spun with silk, and silk takes a finer twist than wool, which let the weaver knot diamonds this small — a density of 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, cotton warp, pile clipped to 7 mm. Work this fine takes months at the loom, and the weaver has signed it — a small woven cartouche in the corner of the field.

At home

A rug this size suits a dining room or a generous living room, long enough to hold a table or a seating group. The sand field warms a pale floor, and the rust medallion holds its own against darker furniture without demanding attention. Underfoot it is dense, smooth and firm, made for daily use, and the silk in the pile catches light across the medallion as the day moves through the room.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 351 × 250 cm (8.77 m²) this is a very large rug. It carries a whole seating group with every furniture leg on it, or a dining table with the chairs pushed back. In a small room it becomes the floor rather than a rug.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 8.77 m² that is roughly 3.9 to 4.4 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
