About This Tabriz

Where it comes from

This is a hand-knotted Tabriz, a city-workshop rug from one of Persia's great weaving capitals, measuring 200 x 144 cm (6'7" x 4'9"). Tabriz is known for precise, workshop-drawn medallion designs and a confident command of colour, yet this particular piece takes the opposite path, favouring one pale, close to monochromatic ivory across the whole field.

What you see

The first impression is a soft, weightless ivory, broken only by a blue-grey medallion that seems to float at the centre. Around it, fine floral scrollwork and small rosettes curl in dusty pink, gold and pale blue, kept low enough to leave the field calm. Only in the corner spandrels does the palette sharpen, small notes of dark navy standing out crisply against the pale ground. A wide tan-beige border of floral cartouches and scrolling vine, held between narrow guard stripes, closes the design quietly.

How it was made

That restraint is matched by the construction. The warp is silk, finer than cotton, letting the weaver tie a tighter, more exact knot without thickening the pile's base. Knotted in the symmetric Turkish knot Tabriz is known for, the piece holds 501,000 to 640,000 knots per square metre, a density that let the weaver draw the medallion's curling outlines with real precision. The wool-and-silk pile is clipped to 7 mm, keeping every contour sharp and letting light pool gently across the ivory.

At home

This is a rug for a bedroom or a quiet sitting corner, somewhere to be looked at rather than crossed constantly. Against a pale floor it barely raises the room's warmth, letting the blue-grey medallion and navy corner notes hold the eye. The pile is fine and dense underfoot, suited to a calmer room. As daylight moves across it, the ivory gathers a faint sheen while the medallion stays quietly at the centre.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 200 × 144 cm (2.88 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 501,000 to 640,000 knots per square metre; across 2.88 m² that is roughly 1.4 to 1.8 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
