About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
This is a hand-knotted Tabriz, from the Persian city that has drawn the pattern books for Persian carpet weaving for five centuries, sized 358 x 251 cm (11'9" x 8'3"). Tabriz is where the medallion carpet reached its most disciplined form, and this piece follows that plan closely: a dense diamond lattice field with a bold medallion set precisely at its centre.
What you see
The field is a sandy beige, covered edge to edge in a fine grey-blue diamond lattice, the Mahi pattern repeated so evenly that from a distance it reads as texture rather than motif. Set on top of it is a scalloped medallion in deep brick-red and rust, its jagged outline the one break in the field's quiet regularity. A wide ivory border frames the whole, carrying floral rosettes in red, green and gold that echo the centre's colours out to the edge.
How it was made
Tabriz workshops knot in the symmetric, or Turkish, knot, which locks each thread down tight and gives the clean, ruler-straight outlines a lattice this fine depends on. The pile mixes wool with silk; silk spins far finer than wool, so the weaver can pack in more knots without the weave losing its grip, and here that runs to 501,000-640,000 knots per square metre, months of work at the loom. The rug carries its own signature, woven into the field near the border on the right.
