About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
A Tabriz, from the great weaving city of northwest Persia, 362 x 251 cm (11'11" x 8'3"). Tabriz has drawn the templates for Persian medallion carpets for five centuries, and this piece is signed, the mark of a workshop standing behind its own cartoon. What Tabriz weavers are known for above all is the central medallion, drawn with a precision few other cities attempt.
What you see
The first impression is a field so dark it reads almost as black, glowing from within by a rust-red medallion at its centre. That medallion is built in layers, cream at its core, opening outward through rust into the surrounding dark navy Mahi lattice, so the eye reads it as sitting forward of the field rather than woven into it. Camel-coloured spandrels hold the corners steady against all that depth, and a wide, multi-band border of navy and camel, carrying a floral vine, closes the composition without competing with it.
How it was made
That sense of depth is not an accident of drawing; it is a product of how finely the rug is knotted. A silk warp spins far thinner than cotton, and a thinner warp lets the weaver tie more knots into the same square metre, here between 501,000 and 640,000. At that density each of the medallion's concentric layers can be drawn with a clean edge rather than a blurred one, which is what gives the centre its layered, almost three-dimensional read. The wool and silk pile, at 10 mm, sits dense and even, holding that crisp line underfoot as well as to the eye.
At home
At this size the rug is made for a dining table or a living room seating group, and a near-black field of this depth holds its own against dark wood or dark upholstery rather than disappearing beside it. Underfoot the pile is dense and firm, built for a room that is actually used, not one kept for best. As daylight moves across it through the day, the rust medallion is the part that keeps catching the eye, glowing forward from the surrounding dark the way it was drawn to.
