Where it comes from
This is a Tabriz medallion rug, 234 x 170 cm (7'8" x 5'7"), from the city of Tabriz in north-west Iran, the workshop tradition that has set the benchmark for Persian rug-making for five centuries. Tabriz is known above all for its precision — designs drawn out on paper before a single knot is tied, then followed exactly — and for a command of the central medallion that has become shorthand for Persian luxury. This piece uses that discipline in an unusual key: camel rather than the red or ivory ground the design is normally seen on.
What you see
The field is a dense Mahi lattice, the small fish-motif pattern repeated evenly across the camel ground, and out of it rises a star-shaped medallion outlined in cream, with pendants above and below picked out in rust-red and olive-green. Because the outline is drawn in a lighter tone rather than a contrasting colour, the medallion holds its shape without ever fighting the field around it — the whole rug reads as one warm surface rather than a pattern sitting on a background. A wide ivory border, filled with floral vine and palmette work and closed in by narrow navy guard stripes, frames the piece and is the one place the design allows itself real contrast.
How it was made
Achieving that evenness at this scale takes real density: 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, tied by hand in the symmetrical Turkish knot Tabriz weavers favour for the crisp, held edge it gives every motif. The pile is wool blended with silk, which takes a finer twist than wool alone and lets the weaver resolve the small repeats of the Mahi lattice without them blurring into each other — a good part of why the surface carries a light, even sheen rather than a flat matte one. At 7 mm the pile stays low, which is what allows this amount of drawing to stay sharp underfoot rather than sinking into a deeper nap.

A rug this size sits naturally under a dining table or in front of a sofa in a living room, and the camel ground is a generous colour to live with — it warms a pale floor, and holds its own comfortably against dark wood or leather furniture without needing the room built around it. Underfoot it is dense, smooth and firm, built for a room that gets used rather than one kept for best.
