About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
This is a Tabriz, the classic city-workshop weave of north-west Iran, here in a generous 350 x 251 cm (11'6" x 8'3"). Tabriz has drawn the templates of Persian carpet design for five centuries, and its name is shorthand for the medallion rug done properly: a workshop drawing, a symmetric knot, and a level of control few other weaving towns match. This particular piece takes that vocabulary and plays it quietly.
What you see
The field is a soft, dusty rose, covered edge to edge in a fine Mahi diamond lattice that reads almost as texture before it reads as pattern. Out of that quiet ground rises a deep brick-red medallion with a scalloped outline, flanked by two small pendant motifs that anchor it top and bottom, and echoed faintly in the corner spandrels. A wide ivory-cream border holds the whole thing together, carrying a floral vine in rust, navy and olive that is far busier than the field it frames. The contrast is deliberate: a restrained centre held by a lively edge, rather than the reverse.
How it was made
That restraint is a product of the workshop's discipline as much as its palette. The rug is knotted with the symmetric, or Turkish, knot on a cotton warp, at a density of 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre — a tightness that takes a wool-and-silk pile and turns it into that crisp, clean diamond lattice rather than a blur. Silk spins finer than wool alone, so blending it into the pile lets the weaver draw sharper lines at the same knot count, which is exactly where the pattern's precision comes from. At 7 mm the pile stays low and even, giving the surface its light sheen and its smooth, unbroken finish. A small woven signature near the border marks it as an acknowledged piece of work rather than an anonymous run.
