About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
A Tabriz medallion rug, 247 x 170 cm (8'1" x 5'7"), from the city that has set the benchmark for Persian workshop weaving for five centuries. Tabriz is where the symmetric, or Turkish, knot produces the tight, clearly drawn medallions the city is famous for, and where masters are trained to balance colour with real discipline. What is unusual here is the colour itself: this piece is signed by Taraghi, and instead of the deep jewel tones Tabriz medallions usually carry, it is built almost entirely in pastel.
What you see
The field is an open, ivory-cream ground, quieter than the saturated reds and blues typical of the type. A floral medallion sits at the centre, with polychrome sprays and spandrels radiating outward across the field in dusty rose, sage, powder blue and touches of mustard and terracotta. None of these push forward; they sit close together in tone, so the eye reads the drawing before it reads any single colour. A wide sage-green floral border closes the composition, held between narrow cream and rose guard stripes that soften the transition from field to edge rather than sharpening it.
How it was made
That softness is deliberate rather than incidental, and it comes from choices made at the loom. The warp is silk, and because silk spins far thinner than cotton, it lets the weaver tie a much tighter knot without thickening the foundation — here, between 501,000 and 640,000 knots per square metre, a density that takes many months of steady work to complete. That fineness is what allows the floral outlines to stay crisp even while the colours around them stay muted; a coarser weave would have forced harder contrast just to keep the pattern legible. The pile itself is wool over that silk warp, kept short at 7 mm, which gives the surface its smooth, even face and the light sheen that gathers along the drawn edges of the motifs.
At home
At this size, the rug sits comfortably under a seating group in a living room or beneath a bed in a bedroom, rather than needing a full dining table's footprint. Against a pale floor it will warm the room without darkening it; against darker furniture, the ivory ground gives the pieces around it room to breathe. Underfoot it is dense and firm rather than deep, a rug built to be walked on and to hold its shape while doing so. Move a lamp across it in the evening and the sheen along the medallion's outline is the first thing that catches, quietly, before anything else in the room does.
