About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
Tabriz is one of Persia's great weaving cities, a place that has set the benchmark for precision and design discipline for five centuries. This is a round medallion rug from that tradition, 201 x 201 cm (6'7" x 6'7"), and it departs from the jewel tones Tabriz is usually known for in favour of something softer: a pastel palette that gives the whole piece a gentler, more decorative character.
What you see
The field is a pale, ivory cream, and against it the central medallion sits in salmon pink and dusty rose, edged with sage green and light blue foliage that scatters outward across the field. Fine gold scrollwork threads through the design without ever asserting itself. A wide camel border, taking up roughly a fifth of the rug's radius, carries palmettes and vase motifs in the same pink and blue, and because the medallion mirrors perfectly around the circle, the eye finds no seam and no starting point as it travels the design.
How it was made
This precision comes from the way Tabriz rugs are built: woven from a fixed drawn plan with the symmetric, or Turkish, knot, which locks tight and holds a line exactly where the design places it. Here the pile is wool with silk, at a density of 501,000 to 640,000 knots per square metre, which is fine enough to carry the pastel gradations and the mirrored curves of the medallion without them blurring at the edges. Silk spins finer than wool, so wherever it sits in the pile it catches the light differently, and that is what gives the medallion its faint glow against the matte cream ground.
