About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
A Tabriz, one of the great weaving cities of Persia, in a round format measuring 202 x 202 cm (6'8" x 6'8"). Tabriz workshops are known above all for the central medallion, drawn to a fixed plan and knotted with a precision that has served royal courts since the sixteenth century. This one keeps the discipline but not the usual boldness of colour.
What you see
The field is a calm ivory, and across it sits a star-shaped medallion built from soft blue, dusty rose and sage green, held together with camel-toned scrollwork. Floral spandrels fill the space around it, drawn in the same restrained palette rather than the deep jewel tones this design is normally given. The medallion's outer points end in small serrated cusps, each traced in a fine dark line, which gives the whole shape a crisp edge against the pale ground. A moderately wide border repeats the floral scrollwork in beige and camel, with the same touches of blue and rose, offering the field company rather than contrast.
How it was made
This calm is partly a matter of drawing, but the making has as much to do with it as the design. The pile is wool with silk, and silk takes a finer twist than wool alone, which lets the weaver draw a serrated cusp or a thin dark outline with real accuracy rather than a blur. On a cotton warp, knotted by hand in the symmetric Turkish knot at a density of 501,000 to 640,000 knots per square metre, that precision holds across the whole medallion. At this density a rug of this size represents months at the loom, and it shows in how cleanly the pastel shapes are separated from one another.

A round rug asks for a round table, and at 202 cm across this one sits comfortably under a dining setting or in the centre of a seating group, where its shape can be taken in from every chair. The ivory ground lifts a room with pale flooring without adding weight, and the pastel medallion holds its own quietly rather than competing with the furniture around it. The pile is low, even and just 7 mm deep, dense enough underfoot for daily use rather than reserved for best. Under a change of daylight the blue and rose in the medallion shift gently against the ivory, which is the sort of thing a person keeps noticing long after the rug has stopped being new.
