About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
This is a hand-knotted Tabriz runner, also written Tabrīz, 334 x 60 cm (10'11" x 2'0"), from the Persian city long regarded as the benchmark for precision in carpet weaving. Tabriz workshops are best known for their central medallions, drawn and balanced with exceptional control. Here the workshop has turned that same discipline to a different task: an all-over lattice with no medallion at all.
What you see
The field is a deep navy, almost black, and it is covered edge to edge in a fine, dense Mahi lattice — repeating diamonds locked into a Herati-type repeat, running the full length without a centre to rest on. Rust red, camel and ivory pick out the small motifs, warm against the dark ground. The border is not a single stripe but several stacked bands in rust, camel and cream, forming a wide frame that holds the dark field in place.
How it was made
Tabriz weavers use the symmetric, or Turkish, knot, which locks tighter and gives the surface its clean, unbroken lines. Wool with an admixture of silk gives a finer yarn, letting each small diamond in the lattice stay distinct from its neighbour. At 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, this runner carries roughly double the density of an ordinary rug, enough to hold so fine a repeat at eye level. Signed, it is the work of the Pirozian workshop.
At home
A runner of this length suits a hallway or landing, seen in passing rather than sat upon. Against a pale floor the navy field grounds the space, and even in poor light the rust and camel border keeps it from fading. Underfoot the pile is fine and tight, dense enough for daily passage. In low light the silk in the lattice catches and lets go as you move, so the pattern never sits quite still.
