About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
Tabriz has spent five centuries as one of Persia's great weaving cities, its name attached above all to two things: the classical medallion carpet, and the dense all-over Mahi, or Herati, repeat of rosettes and serrated leaves. This piece, 239 x 163 cm (7'10" x 5'4"), is a Mahi through and through, but it takes a colour the design rarely wears. Where Tabriz workshops most often set this lattice on navy or red, here the ground is a deep, tannin green.
What you see
That green carries the whole field, close and finely drawn, the rosettes and leaf forms repeating without a medallion to anchor them, so the eye travels evenly from edge to edge rather than settling in the centre. Around it runs a broad cream border, its ground filled with small floral medallions and vines in red, blue, salmon and soft green, held at the inner edge by a thin rust stripe that keeps the two fields distinct. Terracotta and pale blue recur quietly within the pattern itself. Near the lower border, worked into the field, sits a small woven signature.
How it was made
The workshop behind it, Pirozian, has knotted this at 501,000 to 640,000 knots per square metre, using the symmetric knot Tabriz is known for, which pulls the weave taut and holds every outline of the Mahi pattern sharp rather than soft at the edges. The pile is wool worked with silk over a cotton warp, and the silk is what lets the cream border's small florals stay this legible at this scale — a finer strand takes a tighter, cleaner knot than wool alone allows. At 7 mm the pile sits low and matte, with no sheen to soften the drawing, which is exactly why the density reads as clearly as it does.
At home
A rug this size suits a bedroom or a quieter seating corner rather than a large dining table, and the green earns its keep there: it warms a pale floor without competing, and holds its own comfortably against dark wood or leather furniture. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for daily use rather than display, though the silk content and the fineness of the border argue for a calmer room over a hallway's traffic. As light moves across it through the day, the silk in the field catches faintly along the rosettes, so the green never sits quite flat.
