About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
A Tabriz, also written Täbris, from the Persian city long regarded as the benchmark of workshop weaving, 208 x 149 cm (6'10" x 4'11"). Tabriz is known for precise, cartoon-drawn medallion compositions and a tight symmetric knot that keeps every line crisp. This piece takes that same vocabulary and sets it in a quieter register, working the classic medallion in cream and rust rather than the bolder contrasts the city more often produces.
What you see
The field opens in a soft ivory, closer to bone than white, scattered with small floral sprays in sage green, powder blue, and touches of red and pink. Across it sits a lozenge medallion in rust-terracotta, its points sharp and its pendants reaching so far toward the field's edge that they draw a clear axis the length of the rug. A narrow ochre-gold line runs just inside the outer border, and the border itself, wide and worked in matching rust-terracotta with scrolling vinery, closes the composition without ever raising its voice.
How it was made
The knot here is the symmetric, or Turkish, knot Tabriz weavers favour, tied at 441,000 to 500,000 per square metre, a density fine enough to keep the medallion's points and the border's vinery sharp rather than blurred into their neighbours. Wool carries the field, with silk brought in to sharpen the finer lines of the drawing, which is why each pendant's outline reads so cleanly against the cream ground. A pile just 7 mm deep, clipped smooth and even, catches a light sheen rather than shadow, and that is part of why the field stays as pale as it does.
