About This Tabriz

Where it comes from

This is a Tabriz, also written Tabrīz, a classical medallion carpet from the great Persian weaving city, hand-knotted at 246 x 254 cm (8'1" x 8'4"). Tabriz workshops have set the standard for disciplined, cartoon-drawn design for five centuries, and the medallion is their signature. What sets this piece apart is its format: nearly square, where the design usually stretches across a longer rectangle.

What you see

The ground is a deep blackish-brown with a bluish undertone, covered edge to edge in a fine Mahi lattice of fish and rosettes. From that dense field rises a lobed ivory medallion with a rose-pink centre, its outline so crisp it reads almost like a starburst against the near-black wool. Slender pendants stretch from the medallion toward the corners, giving the field a taut, spoke-like tension. A wide ivory border carries alternating rosettes in rust, olive and gold, closed by narrow guard stripes.

How it was made

The symmetric, or Turkish, knot that Tabriz weavers favour holds a cartoon's lines exactly where the draughtsman placed them, so the medallion's edges stay sharp and its pendants straight. At 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, that clarity took months of steady work on a cotton warp strong enough to keep a square format from settling out of true. Silk runs through the wool pile, catching light along the ivory motifs and giving them a faint sheen against the matte, near-black ground.

At home

At close to two and a half metres square, this Tabriz suits a dining table or a seating group in a living room. The dark ground holds its own against dark wood or leather, and the ivory medallion lifts a pale floor without dominating it. Dense and firm underfoot, it is built for daily use, and as daylight moves across it the silk highlights along the medallion catch and shift.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 246 × 254 cm (6.25 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 6.25 m² that is roughly 2.8 to 3.1 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
