About This Tabriz

Where it comes from

This is a Tabriz runner, also written Tabrīz, 200 x 79 cm (6'7" x 2'7"), hand-knotted in the Persian city that has set the standard for finely drawn, precisely knotted carpets for five centuries. Tabriz workshops are best known for their command of the central medallion, and it is unusual to see that full composition carried into a runner's narrow width rather than kept for a larger format.

What you see

The field runs a deep navy, almost black in low light, filled with a dense Mahi lattice repeating the whole length of the piece. At its centre sits a lozenge medallion with pendants reaching toward each end, holding the lattice's rhythm rather than breaking it. Within the navy ground, notes of red, rust and pale blue surface through the pattern, before a wide floral border in ivory, camel and rust closes the field, edged by two narrow olive-green guard stripes.

How it was made

The knotting follows Tabriz's own tradition, symmetric and dense, at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, tight enough to keep the lattice's fine lines sharp rather than blurred into the ground. The pile is wool with silk, and the silk is what gives the ivory and camel tones their light sheen — a finer fibre than wool, it takes a crisper edge from the knot, which is why the medallion holds its shape even at this narrow width. Clipped to 7 mm, the surface stays even and firm rather than deep.

At home

A runner like this belongs in a hallway or along a landing, taken in at a stride rather than viewed whole. The navy holds its own against a dark floor and lifts a passage with little daylight against a pale one, while the ivory and camel border adds warmth underfoot. Dense and firm, the weave takes daily traffic well, and the silk in the lattice catches a quiet sheen with every pass beneath a hall light.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 200 × 79 cm (1.58 m²) this is a runner. It belongs in a hallway, an entrance, on a landing or lengthways beside a bed. It is too narrow for the middle of a room.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 1.58 m² that is roughly 700,000 to 790,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
