About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
This is a hand-knotted Tabriz, also written Tabrīz, a city-workshop rug from one of Persia's great weaving centres in the northwest, measuring 203 x 145 cm (6'8" x 4'9"). Tabriz has set the standard for Persian carpet weaving for five centuries, its workshops known for precise, symmetrically knotted work and a command of the central medallion design that has become shorthand for Persian luxury.
What you see
The first impression is of an almost monochrome field, cream on cream, with only the faintest colour stepping in. A central rosette medallion sits at the middle of an all-over floral arrangement, palmette sprays radiating outward in soft taupe, dusty rose, muted blue and ochre. Smaller rosette medallions scattered through the field are held in the same pastel range, which is what gives the pattern its unusual evenness. A narrow to medium border of floral vine in beige and taupe closes the design, barely stepping away from the field it surrounds.
How it was made
That calm is a product of the knotting itself. The pile is wool with an admixture of silk, and silk spins far finer than wool, which let the weavers tie a denser knot — here between 321,000 and 380,000 per square metre — without losing definition in a pattern this pale. On a coarser weave, cream on cream would blur into a fog; here every rosette and palmette keeps its outline. A cotton warp holds the piece stable underneath, and the symmetric Turkish knot typical of Tabriz gives the surface its firm, even face.
At home
At just over two by one and a half metres, it suits a bedroom or a quiet study rather than a large hall, laid where there is room to take in the whole medallion at once. Against pale floorboards it reads almost as light itself; against darker furniture the pastel accents step forward. The wool and silk pile is dense yet soft underfoot, suited to a room with gentle daily use rather than heavy traffic, and it is in shifting daylight that the muted blues and dusty rose show themselves best.
