About This Tabriz

Where it comes from

This is a hand-knotted round medallion carpet from Tabriz, also written Tabrīz, one of Persia's great weaving cities, measuring 202 x 202 cm (6'8" x 6'8"). Tabriz has set the standard for Persian carpet art for five centuries, and its weavers are known above all for the central medallion, the design this piece is built around, and for a discipline of drawing that gives every line a clear, deliberate edge.

What you see

The field is a warm ivory, and against it a single medallion in coral and salmon-pink sits exactly at the centre, its pendant spikes reaching toward the corners. Dense floral scrollwork fills the spandrels in soft blue-grey, sage green, lilac and touches of rust, all kept quiet enough that the medallion remains the one strong colour in the room. A wide camel-gold floral border carries the same restraint, framed by two slender ivory guard stripes that hold the whole design without shouting.

How it was made

Tabriz rugs are typically knotted with the symmetric, or Turkish, knot, which locks the wool tightly around a silk warp and produces the crisp, unwavering outlines this medallion depends on. Here the pile itself is wool worked through with silk, so the medallion and the motif lines carry a faint sheen against the matte ivory ground. At a density of 501,000 to 640,000 knots per square metre, this is months of work at the loom, fine enough to hold a curve as exact as this one without a single blurred edge. It is signed by the workshop of Taraghi.

At home

A round carpet asks for a round table, and at just over two metres across, this one sits comfortably beneath a breakfast table or in a bay-windowed corner of a living room, where its ivory ground will lift a pale floor rather than compete with it. The wool and silk pile is dense and firm underfoot, built for daily use rather than to be kept apart from it, and as daylight moves across the room the coral medallion is the one thing the eye keeps returning to.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 202 × 202 cm (4.08 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 501,000 to 640,000 knots per square metre; across 4.08 m² that is roughly 2.0 to 2.6 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
