About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
This is a Tabriz, the classic city-workshop rug of north-west Iran, here in a generous 348 x 248 cm (11'5" x 8'2"). Tabriz has set the benchmark for Persian medallion design for five centuries, its workshops known above all for the symmetric knot, which gives a tight, disciplined weave and razor-clean outlines.
What you see
The field runs a warm sand beige, worked so densely with a fine Mahi lattice that it reads almost as a textured haze rather than open ground. Out of this rises a deep brick-red medallion, scalloped and pointed, with matching pendants above and below, while dark charcoal-brown spandrels hold the four corners. A relatively narrow border carries a cream-ground floral vine in ochre-gold, olive and cream, framed by slim guard stripes of red and dark brown that contrast gently rather than sharply with the field. Close to the border, in the left corner, a small woven signature cartouche marks the piece as the weaver's own.
How it was made
That haze is earned rather than accidental. The lattice is knotted at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, using the symmetric Tabriz knot that holds each line exactly where the cartoon drew it. The pile is wool worked with silk, which spins finer than wool alone and so allows a tighter, more exact knot, giving the surface its slight sheen and its crisp definition. Clipped to a low, even 7 mm, the pattern stays sharp at every edge rather than blurring into its neighbour, which is why the medallion appears to float above the lattice instead of simply sitting on it.

A rug of this size, on a cotton warp built to hold its shape, belongs in a dining room or a living room, running under a table or gathering a seating group. Set against pale floorboards, the sand and camel ground warms the room on its own; against darker wood or leather furniture, the brick-red medallion holds its place without needing to compete. Underfoot the weave is dense and firm, a floor made for daily use rather than careful avoidance, and the silk in the pile keeps just enough gloss to catch the light as it moves through the day, so the lattice never quite looks the same twice.
