About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
This is a Tabriz, also written Tabrīz, from the northwestern Persian city that has led workshop weaving for five centuries, measuring 200 x 148 cm (6'7" x 4'10"). Tabriz is where the classical medallion design was perfected, drawn on paper and knotted to plan rather than from memory, and where the field is usually filled to the edge. This piece takes that tradition somewhere unexpected: the ground is kept open, and the medallion is left to float.
What you see
The first impression is of ivory and cream, an open field with almost no crowding. A round medallion sits at the centre, its floral pendants radiating outward into small sprays of dusty rose, soft blue, mustard gold and sage green scattered loosely across the ground. Nothing presses against anything else. The border repeats the same palette in broad floral bands, gentle rather than framing, so the eye moves from field to border without a hard stop.
How it was made
The precision comes from the symmetric, or Turkish, knot that Tabriz workshops favour, hand-knotted to pull each outline tight and keep the floral drawing crisp rather than soft-edged. The pile is wool with a silk content, and silk spins finer than wool, so the surface takes a light sheen and holds detail a plain wool pile would blur. At 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre, this is fine work, and it is why the small sprays and medallion pendants stay so clean at this scale.
At home
This is a rug for a bedroom or a quiet reading corner, where the ivory ground lightens the room rather than competing with it. It sits equally well against pale flooring or darker furniture, since the colour does the brightening. Underfoot the pile is dense and firm rather than deep, wearing well under daily use. Through the day the silk catches the light differently, so the medallion never quite looks the same twice.
