About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
This is a Tabriz, also written Tabrīz, from the great weaving city of north-west Iran that has set the standard for Persian workshop rugs for five centuries, measuring 188 x 153 cm (6'2" x 5'0"). Tabriz work is known above all for precision: designs drawn out on paper and then knotted to that plan, giving crisp, disciplined outlines rather than a freehand feel. This piece keeps that discipline but sets it against a softer palette than the type is usually given.
What you see
The field is a warm salmon-apricot, gentler than the deep red or ivory grounds more commonly seen on a rug of this kind. Across it spreads dense floral scrollwork, drawn finely enough to hold its detail at close range, gathering at the centre into a large medallion with pendants in ivory-cream, its outlines picked out in dark navy and its leaves in sage green, with touches of dusty pink and pale blue among the flowers. The same floral drawing reappears in the corner cartouches, tying field to border. A wide gold and camel border, banded with thin guard stripes and floral garlands, closes the design without overpowering the peach ground it frames.
How it was made
The clean lines come from the symmetric, or Turkish, knot that Tabriz weavers favour, hand-knotted here at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre on a cotton foundation, a density that takes many months at the loom and is what allows the scrollwork and medallion outlines to stay so exact. The pile is wool blended with silk, and it is the silk that gives the lighter motifs their faint sheen and the surface its softly lit quality, rather than the flatter look of an all-wool pile. Kept low at 7 mm, the pile serves the same purpose: nothing here is meant to blur.
At home
At this size the rug suits a bedroom well, large enough to sit under the foot of a bed or gather a reading corner without asking the room to be rebuilt around it. The salmon-apricot ground is a warm, easy colour to wake up to, gentler than the red usually associated with Tabriz work, and it holds its own equally against pale or dark furniture. Underfoot the weave is dense and firm, wool and silk together giving a surface that is soft but resilient rather than deep and plush, and it wears well under daily use. In low morning light the silk in the medallion and cartouches catches faintly, a quiet detail that becomes part of the pleasure of living with the room rather than a demand for attention.
