About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
This is a Tabriz, hand-knotted in the workshop city of Persia's northwest, 214 x 148 cm (7'0" x 4'10"). Tabriz has drawn the templates for classical Persian medallion design for five centuries, and its weavers are known above all for balance of colour and command of the central medallion. What is unusual here is the palette: this piece is worked entirely in pastels, where Tabriz medallions are more often rendered in deep jewel tones.
What you see
An open ivory field carries a central medallion with pendants radiating outward, held in dusty pink, sage green, powder blue and a soft terracotta red, with small touches of navy set in as quiet punctuation. Dense floral spandrels fill the corners in the same restrained register. The wide camel-toned border, taking up roughly a fifth of the width, repeats the palette rather than contrasting against it, so the whole rug reads as one continuous, airy composition rather than a field framed against a darker edge. A light sheen sits in the pastel motifs, catching most where the wool carries silk.
How it was made
The softness of that palette is a product of the weave, not despite it. The warp is silk, which spins far finer than cotton and lets the knot sit tighter — here to a density of 501,000 to 640,000 knots per square metre, achieved with the symmetric Turkish knot Tabriz is known for, which locks each knot square and gives the motif its clean, unblurred edge. That density is what allows a colour transition as fine as dusty pink into ivory to hold its shape rather than blur, and at this size it represents several months of work at the loom. The piece carries the weaver's signature, a mark of a workshop standing behind its own work.
