About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
This is a hand-knotted Tabriz, also written Tabrīz, from the Persian city that has led workshop weaving for five centuries, measuring 197 x 154 cm (6'6" x 5'1"). Tabriz workshops are known for drawing precise, symmetrical patterns from a fixed cartoon, and above all for their command of the central medallion. This piece carries the signature of the Abdollahi workshop, and its colouring departs from the ivory-and-navy most Tabriz medallions favour, settling instead into a soft, dusty rose.
What you see
The field is that muted rose, laid out in the fine diamond lattice known as mahi, or fish pattern, repeating close and even across the ground. Floating on it is a scalloped medallion in rust-red, echoed above and below by matching pendants. Ivory guard stripes trace the medallion's outline before the eye reaches the border: a wide cream ground carrying rust and olive palmettes, edged in narrow ivory and near-black stripes that hold the whole pink field firmly in place.
How it was made
Tabriz weavers use the symmetric, or Turkish, knot, which locks each thread from both sides and gives the weave the taut, firm structure such precise contours need — a looser knot would let the lattice blur. At 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, this is close, patient work, months at the loom for a rug this size. The pile is wool finished with silk, and it is the silk that lifts the faint sheen catching the medallion's rust and rose. A small woven cartouche in the lower border carries the workshop's mark.

This size suits a bedroom, or a quieter corner of a living room, rather than a large dining table — somewhere it can be read up close rather than crossed in passing. The rose tones warm a pale floor without the weight navy usually brings, and sit calmly rather than competing against darker furniture nearby. The pile is dense and finely clipped, firm underfoot and built to be walked on. As daylight moves across the room, the silk in the medallion catches it and softens in turn.
