About This Tabriz

Where it comes from

This is a hand-knotted Tabriz runner, 198 x 80 cm (6'6" x 2'8"), from the city that has set the pace of Persian weaving for five centuries. Tabriz workshops draw from a cartoon rather than from memory, and the town is known above all for its command of colour balance and for medallion designs so precise they became a byword for Persian luxury. This piece keeps the discipline and drops the medallion.

What you see

The ground is a warm, bright ivory, paler than the deep cream or red usually chosen for this design. Across it runs a dense, all-over Mahi lattice, diamond over diamond, drawn in rust and mustard gold with small touches of powder blue and pink caught in the crossings. There is no medallion to anchor the eye; the pattern simply repeats, even and complete, from one end of the runner to the other. A fairly wide rust-red border closes it, with a dark navy-brown guard stripe carrying small palmette rosettes.

How it was made

The lattice holds its precision because of how it was knotted. Tabriz weavers use the symmetric, or Turkish, knot, tied around two warp threads at once, which pulls the weave tight and keeps every diamond's edge sharp rather than blurred. At 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, that discipline is carried into a pile of wool blended with silk, the silk finer than wool and able to hold a tighter, more exact line. The result is a slight sheen across the surface, visible wherever the light crosses the lattice, and a piece the weaver signed.

At home

A runner this size belongs in a hallway or along a landing, somewhere it is seen in passing rather than sat over. The ivory ground lifts a corridor with no daylight of its own, and the rust and gold lattice keeps its warmth without darkening the space. Underfoot the pile is fine, dense and tightly clipped, firm enough for a passage that gets daily use. Walk it in the evening and the silk in the pile catches the light along its whole length.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 198 × 80 cm (1.58 m²) this is a runner. It belongs in a hallway, an entrance, on a landing or lengthways beside a bed. It is too narrow for the middle of a room.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 1.58 m² that is roughly 700,000 to 790,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
