About This Tabriz

Where it comes from

This hand-knotted rug is a Tabriz, from one of Persia's principal weaving cities, measuring 244 x 195 cm (8'0" x 6'5"). Tabriz workshops are known for precise, workshop-drawn patterns and the symmetric knot, which produces a taut, clearly defined weave. Where Tabriz is usually built around a central medallion, this piece instead carries a dense, all-over Mahi lattice, with no medallion at all.

What you see

The field opens in a warm ivory, an unusual ground for this pattern, which is more often set on red or navy. Across it runs a small-scale diamond lattice, the Mahi motif repeating evenly with no medallion and no single point to rest the eye on. From a short distance it softens into texture, rust-terracotta and camel picking out each diamond against the pale ground. A wide navy-and-rust floral vine border closes the field, drawn with the same precision and holding the ivory firmly in place.

How it was made

Tabriz weavers use the symmetric, or Turkish, knot, tied here at 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre on a cotton warp. The pile is wool with an admixture of silk, spun finer than wool alone, and it is the silk that keeps each small diamond in the lattice sharp-edged rather than soft. At this density, an all-over field asks more of the loom than a single medallion would, since every diamond across the ground has to be drawn and knotted correctly in its own right.

At home

At 244 x 195 cm, this rug suits a dining table for six, or a seating area in a living room. The ivory warms a pale floor, while the navy-rust border holds its own against dark furniture. Underfoot it is tight, short and firm, with a light silk sheen that shifts as you move. Made for daily use, the lattice offers something new to notice as the light changes.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 244 × 195 cm (4.76 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 4.76 m² that is roughly 1.5 to 1.8 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
