About This Tabriz
Where it comes from
A Tabriz, the classic city weaving of north-west Persia, in a near-square format of 250 x 255 cm (8'2" x 8'4"). Tabriz workshops have set the standard for finely drawn, precisely knotted carpets for five centuries, and their reputation rests above all on the central medallion, drawn from a cartoon and worked out in the loom with exact symmetry. This piece takes that tradition and does something quieter with it.
What you see
The eye goes first to a warm brick-red field, glowing rather than shouting, and then to the navy medallion sitting on it. Look closer and the medallion is not a solid shape at all: its scalloped outline is built from dozens of small cream cartouches, strung together into a rosette chain that reads more like lace than like a filled medallion. The rust ground around it carries a fine, all-over lattice in the mahi manner, olive-green spandrels settle into the corners, and a wide ivory border, close to a fifth of the rug's width, carries dense red and gold floral scrollwork that frames the whole composition without competing with it.
How it was made
That lace-like edge is only possible because of how the piece was knotted. Tabriz weavers use the symmetrical, or Turkish, knot, which locks each tuft firmly around both warp threads and gives a taut, stable weave with clean, held lines — exactly what a chain of tiny cartouches needs if it is not to blur into a solid ring. The pile itself is wool with an admixture of silk, and silk spins finer than wool, so wherever the weaver reached for that extra sharpness, in the medallion and its motifs, the knot count could run tighter, up to 640,000 per square metre. At that density, worked at 7mm pile height, this rug represents months of continuous knotting under the Abdollahi workshop, whose signature it carries.
At home
Being close to square, this is a rug meant to be walked around and seen from every side, which suits a square dining table or a seating group set in the middle of a living room rather than a piece pushed against one wall. The rust warms a pale floor and holds its own comfortably against dark wood or leather furniture. Underfoot it is dense, firm and even, built for daily use rather than display, and as light moves across the room through the day, that cartouche chain around the medallion is what keeps catching it.
