About This Koliayie
Where it comes from
Behind this piece stands the Koliai tradition, also written Koliayie — tribal and nomadic Kurdish weaving from the Songhor district of western Iran, part of the wider Kurdistan and Kermanshah weaving region. This runner measures 318 x 150 cm (10'5" x 4'11"). Koliai weavers are known for dense, high-pile rugs built around a bold central medallion, usually set within a purely geometric field.
What you see
Here the field is a deep, near-black navy, carrying two coral-red diamond medallions set one above the other in a chain down the length of the rug. On either side, camel-coloured panels break the dark ground, and within them stand pairs of horned animal figures, deer or goat, facing one another — a figurative detail this design does not usually offer. Floral sprays in teal, mustard and pink fill the spaces between, and the whole is held by an unusually wide, multi-band border of navy and rust zigzag and diamond, finished in cream.
How it was made
The rug is hand-knotted on a cotton warp, with hand-spun wool pile grown on mountain pasture and left with its natural lanolin, which is what gives the wool its quiet sheen even under a matte surface, and its resistance to wear. At a density of 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre and a 12mm pile, the weaver had enough definition to knot the animal panels cleanly rather than let them blur into ornament, and she did it from memory, with no drawn plan to follow, so that facing pair of figures is her own decision, repeated by hand.

Against pale floorboards the coral medallions and camel panels lift a corridor that daylight rarely reaches, while the navy ground keeps it grounded rather than bright. Morning or evening light along its length picks out the animal figures first, before anything else.
