About This Koliayie

Where it comes from

This is a Koliai, also written Koliayie, a Kurdish tribal weaving from the Songhor district of western Iran, part of the Kurdistan-Kermanshah weaving region. The type is known for firm knotting, a high pile and a lively, saturated palette, usually set over a busy, all-over field. This piece measures 310 x 162 cm (10'2" x 5'4"), its field left almost bare.

What you see

A bold ivory-and-navy stepped medallion, its long pendant arms reaching toward each end, sits almost alone on the deep brick-red field, unusually quiet for a Koliai. Its centre is soft ivory-pink, its outline crisp navy, and the same navy returns in the corner spandrels, worked with small hooked devices against a salmon-pink ground, bird-like though chiefly abstract. A wide multi-band border in salmon-pink and navy, taking up a fifth of the width, closes the design with hooked motifs that echo the medallion's angularity.

How it was made

The pile is hand-spun wool, cut to 12 mm and hand-knotted onto a cotton warp at 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, dense enough to hold a crisp, angular outline rather than blur it. Koliai weavers knot from memory rather than a drawn cartoon, and here the maker left the field bare rather than filling it, letting the medallion carry the design. The mountain wool, rich in lanolin, gives the surface its ribbed, matt sheen and durability.

At home

A rug this size suits a bedroom or a quiet corner of a living room, where the whole medallion can be seen rather than hidden under a table. The brick red warms a pale floor and holds its own against dark wood, while the ivory medallion keeps the eye moving. Underfoot the high, hand-spun pile feels dense and rustic, made for daily use. Daylight catches the matt wool softly, and the medallion seems to shift as it moves.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 310 × 162 cm (5.02 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 5.02 m² that is roughly 1.0 to 1.3 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
