About This Gabbeh

Where it comes from

A Gabbeh Shouli, a village-woven member of the Gabbeh family from the tribal weaving regions of southern Persia, 292 x 203 cm (9'7" x 6'8"). Gabbeh rugs are known above all for their thick, lustrous pile and their bold, pared-back designs, and this piece pushes that simplicity further still, into something closer to a grid of colour than a classic tribal pattern.

What you see

The first impression is calm: eighteen muted colour blocks float across a broad cream field, set out in a steady grid rather than a dense repeat. Look closer and each panel holds its own small pair of stylised four-legged animals, woven in cream so they sit just below the colour rather than on top of it. Taupe, warm brown, grey-blue, mustard and olive-grey recur across the blocks, no two neighbours quite the same. A plain, sandy-beige border, only a shade darker than the field, closes the whole as a soft frame rather than a firm line.

How it was made

This is hand-knotted by a village weaver working from memory rather than a drawn cartoon, which is why the grid keeps its order without ever feeling ruled. The wool is hand-spun on a natural wool warp, and hand-spinning gives yarn of uneven thickness, so within each panel the colour breaks and streaks a little rather than lying flat, a texture no machine-spun wool can produce. That same wool is knotted thick and full, the pile deep enough to soften the small animal figures into a gentle cream shadow.

At home

At this size the rug belongs in a living room, under a seating group rather than a dining table. The cream ground lifts a pale wood floor without disappearing into it, while the muted taupe, brown and grey-blue blocks hold their own quietly against darker furniture. Underfoot the pile is thick and soft, the depth Gabbeh weaving is made for, comfortable for bare feet and sturdy enough for daily family use. As light crosses the panels through the day, the cream animal figures drift between shadow and colour, a quiet detail that keeps this modern-looking grid from ever sitting still.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 292 × 203 cm (5.93 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
