Where it comes from
This is a Lori-Pars rug, 186 x 146 cm (6'1" x 4'9"), from the nomadic weaving tradition of the Zagros mountains in south-western Iran, a lineage more usually recognised for its confident colour and thick, lustrous handspun wool. This particular piece takes that tradition somewhere quieter: instead of the bold reds and blues typical of Lori and Gabbeh weaving, the maker chose to work almost entirely in tone.
What you see
The field is a warm, sandy cream, left close to the natural colour of the wool. Rather than a single medallion, it is structured by two nested rectangular frames set side by side, like a pair of windows built from concentric lines rather than filled with a motif. A border of thin taupe-grey and light camel bands runs around the whole piece, echoing the same architecture in a slightly deeper key. Nothing here competes for attention; the entire design is carried by outline and repetition rather than by colour or ornament.
How it was made
Handspun wool is never perfectly even, and that is exactly what gives this rug its quiet life: faint striations and ribbing move through the flat, matt pile instead of a uniform machine-spun surface. At 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, the density is generous enough to hold the fine concentric lines crisply while still allowing the wool's natural texture to show through, rather than smoothing it away. An 11 mm pile, knotted entirely by hand over a natural wool warp, gives the surface enough body to read as substantial underfoot without losing the softness that handspun yarn naturally carries.
At home
A piece this size works well in a bedroom or a smaller seating area, somewhere it can be seen whole rather than disappearing under furniture. Against pale floors it settles in rather than announcing itself, warming the room without adding another pattern to compete with; against darker wood or furniture, the cream and taupe hold their own quietly.
