About This Belutsch
Where it comes from
This is a Baluch rug, also written Belouch, a tribal weaving from the borderlands of southeastern Iran, 179 x 94 cm (5'10" x 3'1"). The type is known for bold geometric patterning, deep reds and indigo, and for prayer-niche, or mihrab, layouts knotted from memory. This piece carries two such niches side by side, each telling a different story.
What you see
A strong brick red fills both fields, the colour holding the eye before any detail separates from it. The rug is laid out as two adjoining mihrab panels rather than one, each on the same red ground. The left niche holds what reads as a stepped, tower-like architectural form with vertical columns; the right holds a vase of flowers. Touches of teal, orange, salmon and dark blue sit inside both scenes. A wide, near-black border encloses the whole, its edge cut into a sharp ivory zigzag.
How it was made
Everything here was knotted by hand, from memory, on a portable loom, without a drawn cartoon. The wool is handspun, which gives the pile its slightly uneven, matte surface, and it sits on a cotton warp at a density of 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre — coarse enough for bold shapes rather than fine city precision. That freedom explains why the two niches were never meant to mirror each other, one side holding an architectural form, the other a flowering vase.
At home
At this size the rug suits a hallway, a landing, or the floor beside a bed, somewhere seen close rather than crossed at a distance. The red warms a pale floor and holds its own against dark furniture. Underfoot it is dense and firm, wool meant to be walked on rather than kept for show. Morning light catches the ivory zigzag first, then settles on the two quiet scenes inside.
