About This Belutsch

Where it comes from

This is a Baluch rug, also written Belouch, a tribal weaving from the borderlands of southeastern Iran, measuring 192 x 98 cm (6'4" x 3'3"). Baluch weavers are known for bold, angular geometry and a rich, earthy palette, carried from memory rather than from a drawn plan. Here the geometry is unusually exact: a dense diamond lattice, set down with a precision this tradition does not always show.

What you see

The field is a deep rust red, packed edge to edge with diamonds that alternate red and near-black, each centred on a small ivory rosette. There is no medallion and no open ground: the lattice runs corner to corner as one continuous grid, read first as pure pattern rather than a scene. A wide dark brown-black border carries a red hooked latch-hook meander, flanked by narrower guard stripes of small red-and-ivory diamonds that repeat the field at a smaller scale.

How it was made

Hand-knotted on a cotton warp, the pile is hand-spun wool clipped to a firm 6 mm, set at 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre. Hand-spun wool is never perfectly even, and that unevenness is usually what softens a Baluch pattern into gentle, wandering lines. Here the weaver held the grid steady regardless, and the diamonds keep their sharp edge from corner to corner. Twenty to forty years old, the rug still shows that discipline in every row.

At home

At 192 x 98 cm, this rug suits a hallway, a landing, or the floor beside a bed. The deep rust red warms a pale floor and holds its own in a dim corridor, while the near-black lattice keeps the whole composition graphic rather than heavy. Underfoot the wool is dense, firm and matte, built to be walked on daily. Pass a lamp across it in the evening and the ivory rosettes catch the light first, one after another.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 192 × 98 cm (1.88 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre; across 1.88 m² that is roughly 240,000 to 300,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
