About This Lori
Where it comes from
A Lori rug, sometimes written Luri, measuring 282 x 206 cm (9'3" x 6'9"), from the nomadic weaving tradition of Iran's Zagros mountains, where such pieces were made for warmth and everyday beauty on portable looms rather than to a fixed plan. This one carries a signature: Heidarian, a maker whose name collectors of Lori work recognise, and it shows in the discipline of what follows.
What you see
The field is a deep navy, scattered all over with small rosettes in coral, muted blue, sage and dusty gold. Running down the centre is a column of six angular medallions, arranged as three mirrored pairs, and each pair takes its own slightly different combination of colour. The effect is a field that reads as a sequence moving down the rug rather than a pattern simply repeating. Around all of this sits a wide border, close to a fifth of the width, where ivory octagons alternate with coral-red panels of small geometric motifs, held in by narrower guard stripes that keep the busy centre in check.
How it was made
The pile is hand-spun wool, knotted onto a cotton warp at a density of 161,000 to 200,000 knots per square metre, with a 12 mm pile height. Hand-spun yarn is never perfectly even, and that slight variation is what gives the surface its matte look and the faint ribbing you can see along the edges. Holding six medallions in three deliberate mirrored pairs, from memory and without a drawn cartoon, is not a small thing for a nomadic weaving, and it is exactly this discipline inside the freedom of the technique that a signed piece is meant to show.
At home
At 282 x 206 cm this is a living room rug, sized for a seating group rather than a passageway. The navy ground holds its own against dark furniture and timber floors alike, while the coral and ivory border keeps the room from feeling heavy, and the scattered rosettes give a pale, plain-walled room something to look at without any need for more colour around it. Underfoot the pile is dense and firm, short enough to take daily footsteps rather than ask to be protected from them. As the light in the room changes through the day, it is the shift between the three medallion pairs, each in its own quiet palette, that keeps catching the eye.
