About This Lori-Pars

Where it comes from

This is a Lori-Pars, also written Luri, a hand-knotted nomadic weaving from the Zagros mountains of Iran, 197 x 148 cm (6'6" x 4'10"). Rugs of this kind are known for bold, simplified motifs knotted from memory, in colours as confident as the women who chose them. This particular piece takes that same tradition and asks it to sit still.

What you see

A warm honeygold covers the field almost as a single wash, lightened here and there by soft abrash where the hand-spun wool caught the dye unevenly. Look again and faint ochre lines cross the field, dividing it into a loose grid of large rectangular panels — no medallion, no border of interlocking motifs, just this quiet architecture. The border itself is barely a border at all: a narrow band only a shade paler than the field, blending into it rather than framing it.

How it was made

The calm in this design comes from the making. Hand-spun wool varies slightly in thickness along its length, and that is what gives the surface its fine vertical striations and its shifting, banded tone rather than one flat colour. A Lori-Pars is knotted from memory, without a drawn plan, and here the weaver chose restraint over the bold geometry her tradition usually favours. At 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre the weave holds that quiet grid clearly while keeping the wool soft underfoot.

At home

This is a rug for a bedroom or a quiet reading corner, not a hallway to cross. The honeygold warms a pale floor and sits comfortably against dark wood. Underfoot the wool is soft, the pile deep enough to give slightly with each step, better suited to a calm room than to heavy traffic. Watch it in evening light and the abrash shifts gently across the panels.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 197 × 148 cm (2.92 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 2.92 m² that is roughly 590,000 to 730,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
