About This Ghotblouie
Where it comes from
This is a Ghotblouie, a tribal weaving from the Zagros mountains of southern Iran, part of the wider nomadic tradition of Fars province. Zagros weavings are known for bold geometry and deeply saturated colour, knotted from memory on a portable loom rather than from any drawn plan. This piece measures 213 x 143 cm (7'0" x 4'8"), and it steps quietly away from that expectation.
What you see
The ground is a warm cream rather than the deep red usual for the type, planted with rows of rose bushes in crimson and pink, their foliage in olive and sage green. There is no medallion; the pattern runs edge to edge as a lattice of bouquets, each one a small floral study rather than a repeating abstract motif. A wide navy-blue border carries the same roses in red and pink sprays, striking against the pale field, and is closed by a narrow dark red-brown guard stripe scattered with small flowers.
How it was made
The wool is hand-spun in the Zagros mountains and hand-knotted onto a cotton warp, at 72,000 to 90,000 knots per square metre — modest beside a city workshop, generous for work done from memory on a portable loom. That density and a pile clipped to 12 mm let each rose stand as its own bouquet rather than blur into a repeat, and the small variations from bush to bush are the trace of a hand working without a drawn plan. Forty to sixty years have settled the wool into a firm, matte surface.
At home
This size suits a bedroom, laid beside the bed or under a reading chair, or a quieter corner of a living room. The cream ground lifts a room with little daylight, while the deep red and navy hold their own against darker furniture. The pile is dense, matte and firmly clipped, comfortable underfoot and made for daily use rather than careful protection. As the light moves across the room through the day, the rows of roses catch it one after another, keeping the whole field quietly alive.
Loribaft rugs are woven by Lori (Lur) tribes in the Zagros Mountains of western Iran, spanning parts of Lorestan, Khuzestan, and Fars provinces. The name "Loribaft" means "woven by Lori" and designates a distinctive tribal weaving tradition rooted in nomadic life, where rugs are made on horizontal ground looms during seasonal migrations.
