About This Belutsch

Where it comes from

This is a Baluch, also written Belouch, a tribal weaving from the borderlands of southeastern Iran, measuring 201 x 97 cm (6'7" x 3'2"). The type is known for deep, earthy reds and indigo blues, and for bold geometric patterns carried from memory rather than a drawn plan. Here that memory has produced something unusually ordered: three medallions set in a single column.

What you see

The field is a deep brick red, and down its centre run three stepped diamond medallions, linked one to the next like beads on a thread. Each sits on a near-black brown ground, picked out in ivory, a little mustard, orange and pale pink. Around this column runs a wide dark brown border, filled with serrated latch-hook forms and small stars, holding the red field firmly in its frame.

How it was made

The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton warp, knotted at 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre, with a pile height of 6 mm. In skilled tribal hands that density is enough to hold three stepped diamonds in near-perfect alignment, with no drawn plan to follow. The hand-spun yarn leaves a faint ribbing across the surface and a matte face, so the geometry reads clearly rather than softened by sheen. At twenty to forty years old, the wool has already worn in evenly.

At home

At just under a metre wide, this rug suits a hallway or landing, for walking on rather than sitting around. The brick red warms pale floorboards and holds its own against dark wood, while the near-black borders keep it grounded rather than loud. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for daily footsteps, with real texture from the hand-spun wool. Light moving down a corridor catches the ivory and mustard in the medallions through the day.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 201 × 97 cm (1.95 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre; across 1.95 m² that is roughly 250,000 to 310,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
