About This Koliayie

Where it comes from

This is a Koliai — also written Koliayie — a tribal weaving from the Kurdish flocks of the Songhor district in western Iran, part of the wider Kurdistan and Kermanshah weaving country. It measures 294 x 174 cm (9'8" x 5'9"). Koliai rugs are known for a dense, high-piled weave and a saturated, energetic palette built around a large central medallion — though this one draws that medallion with unusual precision.

What you see

A bright red field announces itself first, and against it sits a medallion of deep blackish-blue, drawn long and hexagonal rather than round or diamond-shaped. Dense floral sprays in cream, camel, pink, sage green and light blue fill it so closely that it reads almost as a second field set inside the first. A broad black border, patterned with a running repeat of palmettes and flowerheads, closes the design, taking up close to a fifth of the width and holding the red firmly in place.

How it was made

The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton warp, forty to sixty years old, and the wool carries the particular sheen that comes from fleece grazed on high mountain pasture, rich in lanolin. At 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre, the knotting is close enough to let the weaver draw that long hexagonal medallion with a clean, almost graphic edge, rather than the softer line a looser knot would give. A 12 mm pile holds the colour with depth, without blurring the drawing.

At home

This rug suits a living room, laid under a seating group or in front of a sofa. The red field holds its own against dark wood and warms a pale floor, while cream and sage in the medallion keep it light. Underfoot the wool is dense and slightly grainy, built for daily use. As afternoon light moves across it, the black medallion sharpens against the red.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 294 × 174 cm (5.12 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre; across 5.12 m² that is roughly 650,000 to 820,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
