About This Dorokhsh
Where it comes from
This is a Dorokhsh rug, 287 x 197 cm (9'5" x 6'6"), from the weaving villages of south Khorasan in eastern Iran, near Birjand, where Dorokhsh and its neighbour Moud share a tradition of fine drawing and a soft, polished surface. Dorokhsh pieces are valued for an elegance that sits calmer than most village weaving, with balanced floral and garden motifs suited to a well-lit room.
What you see
At first glance it reads as a tidy grid of cream, brick red, deep green and navy boxes, more checkerboard than continuous field. Each small panel carries its own motif, a paisley, a floral spray, a geometric turn, so the rug feels like a collection of miniature garden pictures rather than one repeating pattern. A wide ivory border, dense with a polychrome floral vine and flanked by narrow navy guard stripes, gathers it all together, and in its left corner a small pair of birds seems to sit among the vine.
How it was made
The pile is wool blended with silk, hand-knotted onto a cotton warp at a density of 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre. Silk spins far finer than wool, so working it into the pile allows a tighter knot without losing definition, and that is what keeps each small panel's motif clear even at this compressed scale. The pile itself stands only 12 millimetres deep, clipped close and even, which gives the surface the light, even sheen Dorokhsh weaving is known for. The rug carries a signature, a weaver's mark left on a finished piece.
At home
At this size the rug suits a dining room or a living room seating group, large enough to sit under a table or gather a sofa and chairs. The cream ground lifts a pale floor, while the brick red, green and navy panels hold their own against darker furniture or a room with little daylight. Underfoot it is dense and firm, the wool-silk pile compact enough for daily use rather than a piece to keep for best. As daylight crosses the room, the silk catches first in one panel, then another, so the rug seems to shift quietly through the day.
