About This Dorokhsh
Where it comes from
This is a Dorokhsh, from the same South Khorasan weaving villages near Birjand in eastern Iran that also produced the better-known Moud. At 296 x 185 cm (9'8" x 6'1") it suits a dining table or a generous seating group. Rugs of this kind are prized for refined drawing and a soft surface sheen, both present here, though the layout is a livelier variation than the type is usually known for.
What you see
The field is built as a grid of small rectangular panels, cream, brick red and navy in steady alternation, each holding its own floral spray, a slender cypress, or a paisley form. Olive green and pale blue-grey sit inside these compartments as quiet accents, while a warm terracotta tone reappears in the guard stripes and ties the panels together. There is no medallion to anchor the eye; instead it settles into the rhythm of the grid before moving out to a wide ivory border, its vines held inside a narrow dark navy line.
How it was made
The pile is wool with an addition of silk, knotted by hand at a density of 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre. Silk takes a finer twist than wool, and that finer thread is what let the weaver reach a knot count in this range, giving each compartment its clean, almost drawn edge rather than a blurred one. At 12 millimetres the pile keeps enough depth to read as a full rug underfoot while still catching the light across its surface. The piece is signed, a mark of a design carried through with some care.
At home
In a dining room, the grid holds its order under a table without competing with what stands on it, and the cream grounds lift a darker floor while the red and navy keep the piece grounded against pale furniture. The wool and silk pile is dense and firm underfoot, built for regular use rather than a room kept for best.
