About This Dorokhsh

Where it comes from

This is a Dorokhsh rug, 287 x 197 cm (9'5" x 6'6"), from the weaving villages of South Khorasan in eastern Iran, closely related to neighbouring Moud and known for elegant drawing and a soft surface sheen, built here around the classic Mahi lattice and a central medallion.

What you see

The field is a warm sandy beige, filled edge to edge with a fine, dense Mahi lattice. At its centre sits a large medallion in deep navy and brick red, its outline not the usual smooth scallop but a sharply radiating, sunburst-like edge that gives it far more graphic punch than is typical for the type. Small pendant medallions echo the same shape above and below. A wide brick-red border, worked with palmettes and vines, is framed by narrower ivory and navy guard stripes that hold the pale field firmly in place.

How it was made

The rug is hand-knotted in wool with an admixture of silk over a cotton warp, at a density of 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre. Silk spins finer than wool, so blending it into the pile lets the weaver pack in more knots without losing definition, which is exactly why the medallion's radiating points come through so cleanly instead of blurring into the lattice around them. At 12 mm the pile stays low and even, giving the surface its slight, polished sheen. The piece is signed.

At home

At this size, the rug sits well under a dining table or in front of a living room sofa group, the beige field warming a pale floor while the navy-and-red medallion holds its own against darker wood furniture. Underfoot it is dense, firm and smooth, a weave made for daily use rather than display. As light moves across the room through the day, that sunburst medallion seems to shift and catch, never quite the same twice.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 287 × 197 cm (5.65 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 5.65 m² that is roughly 1.8 to 2.1 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
