About This Dorokhsh

Where it comes from

This is a hand-knotted Dorokhsh, a village weaving from the Khorasan region of eastern Iran, sized 243 x 202 cm (8'0" x 6'8"). Dorokhsh rugs share their weaving tradition with the neighbouring village of Moud, also spelled Moude, and are prized above all for an elegant, refined drawing and a subtle surface sheen, calmer and more polished than many Persian village pieces. This is a clean, well-drawn example of that quality.

What you see

The field is a deep brick red, dense and warm. At its centre sits a navy lobed medallion with two pointed pendants, standing out sharply against the red ground. Around it runs an all-over diamond lattice of small rosettes, the Mahi or Herati repeat that gives Khorasan village rugs their quiet rhythm, with small rose-pink accents at the corners. The border is ivory, carrying a rust-red and navy floral vine, framed by narrow guard stripes.

How it was made

This density and drawing come from a wool pile spun with a touch of silk over a cotton warp, at 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre. Silk fibre spins finer than wool, so wherever it runs through the pile the weaver can tie a sharper, tighter knot, which is what gives the medallion its crisp outline and the field its subtle sheen. At a 12 millimetre pile height the surface stays flat and even, letting the drawing read clearly rather than disappearing into a thick pile.

At home

This rug suits a dining table with room to spare, or a seating group in a well-lit living room, where daylight crossing the pile brings out its sheen. The brick red holds its own against dark wood and warms a pale floor. Underfoot the pile is fine, dense and firm, made to be walked on, and the medallion keeps catching the light through the day.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 243 × 202 cm (4.91 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 4.91 m² that is roughly 1.6 to 1.9 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
