About This Dorokhsh

Where it comes from

A Dorokhsh, hand-knotted in the neighbouring weaving villages of Khorasan near Birjand in eastern Iran, so close to Moud rugs from the same district that dealers often name the two together. The type is valued for elegant, refined drawing and a subtle sheen that runs across the surface. This piece measures 274 x 209 cm (9'0" x 6'10").

What you see

An ivory field carries a large scalloped medallion in dark navy, its outline curving rather than sharp. Both field and medallion carry the same fine Mahi lattice, so the medallion reads less as a separate shape than as a zone marked out within one continuous pattern. The same lattice reaches into the navy corner spandrels, tying the corners back to the centre. A wide brick-red border of scrolling floral vine and palmette runs around it all, close to a fifth of the rug's width, giving the ivory field a firm edge.

How it was made

The pile is wool with silk, knotted onto a cotton warp at 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre. Silk spins finer than wool, and worked into the pile it lets the same small-scale lattice carry through the medallion as well as the field, without thickening or blurring at the edge. A pile height of 12 mm keeps the surface low and even, taking the light as a soft sheen rather than a shine. The rug carries the weaver's signature.

At home

Under a dining table or in a living-room seating group, the rug earns its place. The ivory field lifts a plain floor, and the navy medallion holds its own against dark furniture. Underfoot the pile is dense, even and firm, made for daily use rather than for keeping still. As the light shifts across it, the lattice inside the medallion seems to breathe.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 274 × 209 cm (5.73 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 5.73 m² that is roughly 1.8 to 2.2 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
