About This Ghashghai

Where it comes from

This is a hand-knotted Qashqai rug, also written Ghashghai, one of the great nomadic weavings of southern Iran, 284 x 185 cm (9'4" x 6'1"). The Qashqai move seasonally between the high pastures of Fars and the lowlands near Shiraz, and their rugs are widely held to be the most recognisable of all Persian tribal weaving, prized for bold medallions and a fearless palette. Here the medallion itself has multiplied.

What you see

A vivid brick red fills the field first, and against it seven medallions in ivory and navy climb the middle in a chain of small and large diamonds, flanked left and right by two further medallions of the same colouring — a cross laid over the field rather than one medallion on open ground. Around it the red carries small stars, hooks and rosettes, closed off by a wide navy border of stepped motifs and narrow ivory guard stripes.

How it was made

This rug was knotted entirely from memory, without a drawn plan, on a loom carried between camps, the condition under which a single medallion becomes seven. The wool is hand-spun and knotted at a medium density of 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre, coarser than a city workshop, giving the 12 mm pile its slightly uneven, matte surface and fine ribbing. At twenty to forty years old, it has already spent decades underfoot, proof of how well this weight of wool wears.

At home

A rug this size suits a dining room or a seating group in a living room. The red holds its own against dark wood and warms a pale floor without needing a matching palette. Underfoot the pile is dense and slightly springy, built for daily use rather than for show. Morning light catches the ivory of each medallion, so the cross seems to shift through the day.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 284 × 185 cm (5.25 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre; across 5.25 m² that is roughly 670,000 to 840,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
