About This Ghashghai
Where it comes from
This is a Qashqai, also written Ghashghai, a tribal rug from the nomadic confederation that moves between the highlands of Fars province and the lowlands near Shiraz, measuring 305 x 217 cm (10'0" x 7'1"). Qashqai weaving is often called the best known of all Persian tribal work, prized for its bold rosette medallions, animal figures and the tribe's own oversized boteh, carried in warm reds, deep navy and bright ivory.
What you see
The field is a deep brick red, and down its centre run three linked diamond medallions in ivory and navy, forming a column rather than a single centrepiece. Small motifs sit among the floral fillers scattered across the red ground, some reading as tiny birds or animals, catching the eye as it moves from one medallion to the next. A broad indigo border, close to a fifth of the rug's width, closes the composition, its own field dense with small motifs and four large rosette medallions set into the corners.
How it was made
The wool is hand-spun, thicker and less even than machine-spun yarn, and this is why the surface reads matte and faintly ribbed rather than catching light the way a finer city rug does. At 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre, the knotting holds the three medallions in clean outline without needing the fine grid a workshop cartoon would require, since a Qashqai weaver works from memory alone. A 12mm pile of hand-spun mountain wool gives the rug its depth and weight underfoot.
At home
At 305 x 217 cm this suits a dining room, easily under a table, or a seating group in a living room. The brick red warms a pale floor and holds its own against dark wood; the indigo border keeps it grounded. Underfoot it is dense and firm, made for daily use. As light crosses the room, the ivory medallions catch it first, leading the eye down the row.
