About This Ghashghai
Where it comes from
This is a Qashqai, also written Gashgai, a tribal weaving from the migratory Qashqai confederation of Fars province in southern Iran, 250 x 145 cm (8'2" x 4'9"). Qashqai rugs are often called the best known of all Persian tribal weavings, valued for bold medallions, animal figures and a boteh drawn larger than elsewhere, set against an unmistakable palette of red, navy and ivory.
What you see
A dense brick-red field carries the eye first, settling on a large hooked-diamond medallion in dark navy, its centre hung with a pale rosette pendant. The same shape repeats in miniature at each corner, where a small ivory cross-shaped pendant echoes the medallion, so the layout reads almost as five medallions rather than one with four spandrels. A zigzag guard line separates the field from a wide, near-black border of stacked hooked lozenges in cream, filling close to a fifth of the width.
How it was made
This is nomadic work, knotted from memory on a portable loom rather than a drawn plan, which explains the confident, faintly irregular hand behind the medallion. Warp and pile are both hand-spun wool, giving a matte, slightly uneven surface with no directional shine, and the pile is clipped to 12 millimetres for depth without softness. At 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre the weave stays open enough to keep the drawing bold, which is exactly what a medallion of this scale needs.
At home
A rug of this size suits a seating area in a living room, in front of a sofa or between two armchairs, where the red warms a pale floor and holds its own against dark wood furniture. The hand-spun pile is dense and firm underfoot, made for daily use. As light moves across it, the ivory pendants catch first, and the medallion keeps its five-part rhythm wherever the room is arranged.

How do I care for this rug?
Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
